The artistic process often coincides with a variety of obstacles, potentially in the form of doubters — from more predictable sorts, like a known bully, to more tragic cases, like an impatient friend. The new single from Brighton, UK-based band The Hiddn, “Whatevrman” tackles that frustration in spirited, melodic form. They describe the track as “against the ‘it is what it is’ mentality which represses and brings unconsciously down the positive good will that everyone naturally has and with which, in all manner of ways, we could achieve collective wellbeing.”
A title-touting anthemic vocal engrossment and steady acoustic strums lead into the declarative opening line: “I won’t give up on integrity.” Grievances of “selling your soul to the man,” further the genuine artistic spirit, with the nostalgic alt-rock/grungy appeal of the title-referencing reprisal stirring with more textural expanse. “When I try to change your mind you say…” they initiate, leading into another catching central hook. The repetition there lends a catchy, anthemic charm that seemingly calls to embrace one’s own individual spirit, moving past haters and doubters while the artistic process retains its genuine form, as it does with this stellar track.
“Whatevrman” represents the first single from the band’s upcoming 13-track album, due to release in September 2024.
