This past September marked the ten-year anniversary of Arctic Monkeys’ album AM, a standout release that bridged the band’s ardent early rock invigoration with the more artful poise of their subsequent explorations. Among the standouts was the opening “Do I Wanna Know?” — and now, Icelandic artist Inki provides her own re-imagining of the track, embracing a chilly electro-touched emotion alongside her ravishing vocal mystique. A range of sleepy keys and climactic percussive spells, culminating in buzzing synths, make for a dynamic success.
The “I wanna know if this feeling flows both ways,” line marks a particularly engaging sequence, where chilly synths and steady rhythmic power traverse into the “crawling back to you,” hook, where buzzing reflections and eerie organs intertwine for a stylish grip. It often takes a strong, stark re-envisioning of a track to grab my attention — in terms of a cover — and Inki’s version of “Do I Wanna Know?” certainly achieves that.
