Harry Kappen – “One Life”

//

“One Life” is a moody slice of captivating balladry from Dutch artist Harry Kappen, journeying from nocturnal contemplation into a soaring guitar power in the second half, full of ’80s nostalgia. “The world’s on fire now,” the vocals let out amidst eerie guitar stylings, fondly reminiscent of Peter Gabriel in its vocal tone and sense of mystery. A heightening vocal pitch emits a melancholic engrossment: “I need one life to live together, only with you.” The darkly compelling yearning is strongly evident amidst a timeless-sounding throwback rock appeal, playing as a relatable plea in a world full of chaos and strife.

The multi-instrumentalist and producer releases “One Life” ahead of his upcoming full-length of the same name, set to drop in early 2024. The track’s atmospheric beginnings evolve into a charismatic guitar-laden outpouring in the second half, as Kappen’s vocals strut a more emotive ascension into the riveting conclusion. “One Life” is wholly exemplary of Kappen’s quality songwriting and knack for moody tonal developments.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2023’ Spotify playlist.
