Telling Secrets – “Fall Behind”

/

An impassioned rocker with emo and alternative nostalgia, “Fall Behind” comes via Telling Secrets, the project of Vik Kovacs. Originally born in Budapest, Hungary, Kovacs has journeyed from various parts of the UK in addition to travelling to Los Angeles, resulting in a transient-feeling journey that lends to his material’s themes, drawn from the frustrations of moving halfway across the world. “This frustration summons a darkness within me, and I am releasing it,” Kovacs says.

The project stirs in its blend of technical, dexterous guitar lines and rhythm sections, drawing from a love for classic rock like Led Zeppelin (Kovacs describes IV as “the first album that I could not put down,”) in addition to an evident modern emo affection, apparent in the dynamic vocal range — showing both adeptness in soaring melodics and screaming intensity.

Lyrical depictions of rejection and a fleeting sense of being resonate amidst the heavy guitar pulses and escalating vocals. The title-touting refrain — “kiss me back at the line,” — proves especially compelling alongside the thunderous percussion and menacing guitar distortion. Telling Secrets shows a gripping sound with “Fall Behind,” which appears on the project’s upcoming full-length LP, set to release in early 2024.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of November 2023’ Spotify playlist.
