Danielle Durack – “Shirt Song”

//

Within its melodic alt-pop production, “Shirt Song” delivers a cathartic satiation in its conveying of how “life goes on,” following a breakup. The effort shows the melodic, heartfelt sound of Danielle Durack, an artist originally from Arizona and now based in Nashville. The track aptly follows up Durack’s 2021 album No Place, which served as “a mournful breakup record.”

“It’s an upbeat breakup song about feeling just a little bit better,” Durack says of this new track. “While sonically it has a happier vibe, the lyrical content still has a very melancholy twinge as it hovers around the theme that everything ends, and even feeling better is just another sign that the era is, in fact, over.”

Representing the first single from upcoming album Escape Artist out on February 16th, “Shirt Song” shows a compelling build. Muted acoustics complement vocals celebrating the next step, as certain elements of a past relationship — like lingering memories, or a nostalgic smell — begin to have less of an impact. “Maybe I just feel anything anymore,” the vocals enamor, with the “last one kiss,” lusher contemplation rising into a blast of melodic guitars. “Shirt Song” is a resonating showing from Danielle Durack.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of November 2023’ Spotify playlist.
