Vanda – “Honeydew”

/

Meshing a pop accessibility with left-field electronic textures, “Honeydew” is the latest single from Los Angeles-based artist Vanda. Elements of hyper-pop and electro intertwine with a dynamic vocal presence, ranging from the initial dreamy “so weak, I’m contemplating,” sequence to the expressive soaring in the chorus, especially compelling amidst textured backings at the two-minute turn.

Marking the final single from her upcoming debut album Sober In Another Life, “Honeydew” kicks off with a fusing of buzzing bass, guitar fragments, and a synth-laden engrossment. The vocals’ emergence finds accompaniment in that buzzing synth, with the other instrumentation arising steadily.

The title-referencing vocal line builds into a bouncy, hooky appeal in the “keep at it,” refrain, followed by the acoustic-touched dreaminess — providing a fantastic bridge in between the bursting electro-pop moments. “Honeydew, glad it’s you,” the vocals enamor with, firmly placing this in replay-inducing territory.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2023’ Spotify playlist.
