“Something // Way” is a hooky single from Toronto-based artist Päter, touting an early ’00s indie-rock nostalgia in the production’s soaring vocal enthusiasm and twangy guitar expressions. I’m reminded aesthetically of acts like Camera Obscura and Neko Case, delivering a peppy and infectious enthusiasm throughout alongside a sense of heartfelt engrossment.
“I grew up listening to a lot of indie and alt rock like The Strokes, Killers, Hollerado,” Päter says. “With this song I wanted to lean as far into that world as I could while keeping it a bit tongue in cheek.”
“Something // Way is a song about stop/starting, feeling stuck, and getting in your own way. I wrote it when I was dealing with a lot of self-doubt around putting music out into the world. It sort of celebrates the rage that comes from attempting to do anything at all but ultimately pushes on without succumbing to it.”
Alongside Vancouver-based co-producer Howard Redekopp, Päter crafts an immediate impact on “Something // Way.” The initial lyrics declare “it’s up to me,” while noting “there’s something in the way,” — the latter line arising with a heart-aching vocal tone as twangy guitars enter the fold. The verses’ punchy charisma evolves into the hook’s melodic emotion with cohesive enthrallment. “Something // Way” is a fun, replay-inducing success throughout from Päter.
