Glossy Boy – ‘The Glossy EP’

/

The Glossy EP is a catchy, polished rock EP from Glossy Boy, a trio from Gloucestershire. Produced by Portishead’s Jim Barr, the EP’s release coincided with a headline launch show at the Troubadour in London’s Earl’s Court.

The opening “Hey Julia” exudes a spirited power-pop allure with adoring lyrics. Melodic, upbeat guitar tones complement vocals reflecting a state of smitten — roused by the confidence strut of the titular character. A suave, bass-forward intro sets the subsequent “Bored” into motion, expanding thereafter into a peppy range of distortion pulses and trickling guitar lines. Lyrics enamor in detailing a sort of stuck-in-limbo regarding relationships — “just bored of the same conversation,” — driving into a lush synth-touched bridge and punchy final minute.

The EP’s remainder also compels. “Campus Crawl” emits a reassuring vocal tone amidst fleeting guitar-laden hooks, reminiscent of Smith Westerns. The whistling segment plays charmingly. The more acoustic-forward “The Girl Who Feels No Pain” and catchy rocker “Paranoid” close things out with satiating appeal.

“Bored” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2023’ Spotify playlist.
