Nathaniel Paul – “We Can’t Keep Running Away”

/

Released today, “We Can’t Keep Running Away” is the latest single from Nathaniel Paul, who is also a member of the band The Bergamot. The track comes via Nathaniel’s upcoming album, Turpentine.

“I produced this song myself and played on the instruments in a closet outside Chicago, IL,” Nathaniel says. “I really wanted to make a full band sound with a synth pop overtone. I wanted something you could enjoy on a long ride with the windows down.”

“During the writing of this song, I was spending a lot of time thinking about death. How it leaves a void in your life. So in retrospect, the mistakes that we make are really insignificant when it comes to this perspective. Just working it all out in the lyrics – or at least trying to.”

A bouncy bass-laden pulse and colorful synth buzzes glide into a laid-back vocal presence, gradually ascending in brightness. The title-touting hook struts a peppy enamoring, as twangy guitar tones and the bouncy bass combine with a lush vocal hookiness. A spacey synth emphasis approaches the two-minute turn, furthering the track’s melodic balance of breezy indie pop and synth-touched serenity. “We Can’t Keep Running Away” is a stellar showing from Nathaniel Paul.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of August 2023’ Spotify playlist.
