A new track from Los Angeles-based artist Grace Corsi and featuring Merrick Winter, “Two Steps Back” pairs a throwback rock styling with engaging lyrical storytelling — narrating “a tired cast of misfits trying to make it in Los Angeles.”
“One step forward and two steps back, who’s gonna listen when you play like that?” the vocals ask, punctuated by suave guitar lines into the multi-vocal “chain reaction,” hook. This central melodic emphasis is bolstered by verses that introduce a number of characters, from “daddy at the bar with the backwards hat” — overly insistent on a call-back — and a “kid on the corner with the brand new shoes.” The captivating track places listeners at the bars and streets of a city, with many inhabitants on a quest for fame, even if it’s a “losing game.”
