The newly released Captured is the debut EP from Fantazmz, the project of NYC-based David Gagne. The sound echoes a stylish ’80s character, from the mysterious synth-pop introspection of “Ugly” to the title track’s anthemic dark-rock punchiness. The latter exudes a scorching, soaring guitar presence that achieves a riveting energy and charisma. Meanwhile, the standout “Ugly” stirs with a lush synth-laden bounce and serene vocal hooks, fondly reminiscent of Scritti Politti.
Gagne first started making music at the age of 10, in his native Maine, and released his first LP in high school. After fronting reggae band EastWave Radio, Gagne and his family moved to southern California for a couple years, before he relocated to NYC in 2016. Also a full-time graphic designer, Gagne shows a clear talent for melodic, atmospheric production with ample pull throughout this EP.
