morph – “nothing’s real” / “second act”

//

The project of Austin-based musician Matt Hall, morph compels with atmospheric psych-pop and rock showings on new tracks “nothing’s real” and “second act,” both part of the upcoming 7-song EP this is all a dream.

“nothing’s real,” morph admits on this resonating track, featuring dreamy psych-pop vocal reflections alongside the stately piano dreaminess. Tender guitar twangs drive delectably into the “this is all a dream,” trippy vocal harmonizing. A gentle integration of synths adds beautifully to the soundscape, before alarm bells wake us from our psych-inclined slumbering.

“You can live in a box, or a castle,” morph opens on the more rock-forward “second act.” The “it’s all you’ve ever known,” escalation stirs amidst the twangy guitars and hazy key-laden illumination, reminding fondly of Deerhunter’s quainter efforts. “second act” is an easily catching rock charmer. These two successes have me firmly anticipating morph’s upcoming EP.

These and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of June 2023’ Spotify playlist.
