Joshua Woo – “Someone’s Star”

Moody synth-rocker “Someone’s Star” is the latest success from Joshua Woo, who continues a strong string of releases following last year’s EP, Beyond The Glass. The London-based artist produced, wrote, and performed the track on his own, describing the effort as “about the perils of becoming overly ambitious to the point you forget what’s important in life.”

Assuming a darker, more brooding tone than several previous singles, “Someone’s Star” achieves a hooky energy nonetheless. Spacey synth reflections are quickly joined by an ardent guitar push, as Woo’s vocals reflect a state of indecision — “Asleep in a dream, awake in a paradise / It’s hard to tell when you’re riding high.” A murky guitar passion builds past the two-minute turn, with Woo’s central culmination — “everyone wants to be someone’s star tonight,” — enamoring melodically. “Someone’s Star” is another stirring entry from Woo.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2023’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
