A ravishing album from Vancouver-based band Idle Moon, NOMAD unveils a suavely engrossing display of instrumental rock. Grooving bass lines and mystique-filled guitar tones interact with debonair enthrallment amidst steady percussion. Even within a consistent arsenal, the album’s tonal versatility impresses, from the peppy rhythm section of “The Long Survival” to the mellow organ-tinged contemplation of “Good Living.”
The album kicks into motion with the scenic “The Endless Nothing,” intended by the band to “capture the mood of floating out in the endless expanse of space before the universe even existed.” Mission accomplished. Gentle guitar pulses expand into a trickling vibrancy as late-night organs emerge in the background, swelling with satiating qualities into rousing percussive expanse and twangy guitars. Another highlight, “Floating in Plastic” shows a playful, chipper charm in its amiable melodic direction, evolving into a psych-friendly daze at its mid-point.
NOMAD is an invitingly atmospheric instrumental rock success from Idle Moon.
