The heady soundscapes from Betageist enthralled last year with the Interference Patterns EP, an atmospheric success reminding of acts like Boards of Canada and Tangerine Dream, in its melding of electronic and rock components. That release’s knack for lengthy, expansive soundscapes continues with the artist’s latest release, “Together.”
The 8-minute epic captures a sense of mystery and loss, taking listeners on a journey that conveys a strikingly realistic dream where one reunites with a loved one who has passed. “It’s a rare track that just poured out and basically wrote itself,” Betageist explains. Indeed, there’s a spontaneity within the production that excels, integrating guitars, synths, and rhythms with touching precision.
The initial foray seamlessly bridges lonesome-sounding guitar tones with gently caressing piano and backing synth trickles, feeling contemplative into the escalating guitar work approaching the three-minute turn. The track progresses with entrancing qualities throughout, and especially in the final two minutes. Here, an eclectic tonal presentation dazzles, swelling from the sleepy piano tones rounding the six-minute mark into a haunting assortment of synths, percussion, and spoken-word mystery. “Together” is another striking atmospheric reveal from Betageist.
