Slovakian band Vlado Nosal & The Avedons show well on their new single “Cold Cigarette,” meshing playful synths and emotive acoustics alongside a passionate duet. The former frontman of acclaimed Slovakian alt-rock band Queer Jane, Nosal is joined again here by multiple Grammy-nominated producer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Sheryl Crow, Billy Bragg, Al Green) and frequent collaborator Boo Hewerdine.
Per the band: “The song’s lyrics can be seen both as an ode to escapism and a tongue-in-cheek reaction to today’s troubled world, mentioning ‘an awful lot of people in heaven,’ who ‘couldn’t get a room in hell.'”
Quaint acoustics and steady percussive minimalism charm amidst the dual-vocal approach, expressing the feeling of writing music “after you’ve gone to bed.” The “I know I’m all ready to go,” escalation rouses into the playful synth sparkles, touting some 8-bit charm. The reprising “all ready to go,” hook shows with further resonance here, traversing enjoyably into the hooky “just might,” interlude. “Cold Cigarette” is a showcase in engaging songwriting from Vlado Nosal & The Avedons.
