“Where To” is a captivating track from Candy Cigarettes, a project featuring the eclectic songwriting of multi-instrumentalist Lane Mueller. The Portland, Oregon-based artist became a regular around Portland’s DIY scene following the project’s self-titled album release in 2016, which we regarded as “one of the more impressive introductions” from that year.
The newly released Horse Lungs represents the sophomore album from Candy Cigarettes, the project’s first release in six years. It marks a triumphant return, featuring an emotive sound ranging from atmospheric post-rock to intimate folk influences. “Where To” is among the many standouts, haunting immediately with its ghostly vocal effects. A twangy rock and folk integration emerges thereafter, with the vocals’ “lay awake,” signaling an ardent rise into a series of stylistic shifts — from the prancing piano-laden momentum to the rousing “be afraid,” hook.
