“Levels” is a captivating psych-rocker from These People, the solo project of producer and songwriter TJ Penzone, based in Long Beach, NY. The project’s new EP, In Place of Time, touts a heady rock sound with ample vigor — led by the stellar, crisp production of Tj and Rick Penzone (Color Film, Richard Flesh). The song also features Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits) on backing vocals.
“Which is the way to get us there?” the vocals ask amidst shimmering guitars and jumpy bass, launching seamlessly into the soaring “we are not who we are,” eruption. “Is there a way to get there fast?” signals the next sequence, eventually culminating in a striking string-infused rock majesty that plays with impressive cohesion. “Levels” is amongst the numerous successes on In Place of Time.
