The background world – “Why”

/

Described by the band as “a song about the bipolar nature of emotions,” “Why” is a melodic new single from Swedish act The background world. The seven-piece was originally formed in 2017 by Martin Platan (lead guitarist, co-songwriter) and Hanna Leijon (lead singer, co-songwriter).

Jangling guitars and mellow keys lead a comfortable introduction, easing into vocals that admit a feeling of helplessness. “Why” quickly ascends from the shrugging chorus, with synth-laden charm injecting during the head-spinning. The “I’ve been forgotten,” bridge plays with darker intrigue, playing as a consuming bridge into the spirited chorus. “I’m head over heels,” the vocals call out here, concocting a replay-inducing fervency in its hooky unveiling.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of October 2022’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Rock.
