New single “It Still Stings” finds Madrid-based project NURK enamoring with hooky guitar escalations and expressive vocal variety.

“It still stings just to think that our love won’t be a thing,” the vocals let out. The yearning is followed by a punchier lament — “but you really wanna find someone,” — with an angsty charm (some shades of Elvis Costello). The more laid-back, melancholic verses grow enjoyably into this lamenting, and then into an exhilarating second half.

The track’s second half excels with a more soaring rock demeanor, continuing the “do you really think?” refrain with added enthusiasm and chirpy guitar/synth interplay. This conclusion feels like audible catharsis, coming to terms with the melancholic reality, while also looking ahead to a more hopeful future. “It Still Stings” engages with its first-half emotion and second-half melodic soaring.

NURK originally began as a solo project based in Austin. Following a move to Madrid, the project grew into a collective, touting musicains from the USA and Europe. Look for more material soon.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of October 2022’ Spotify playlist.
