Los Angeles-based artist David Smalt compels on his new track “Sum of Some Thing,” releasing ahead of his upcoming album Möbius Band of Unrequited Love. Trickling guitar tones and a backing string-laden shimmer complement a serene vocal presence, remarking “all I can see is your love in disguise,” prior to a more symphonic glow emerging in the background.

“You think your heart is so strange,” Smalt sings during the track’s mid-point, hypnotizing amidst the pulsing guitar trickles. The track concludes with an effervescent appeal, as piano and more prominent percussion fade with delicate maneuvering. “Sum of Some Thing” is another success from Smalt, whose upcoming material I continue to anticipate.

Smalt impressed with the single “Unrequited Love” this past August, catching our ears with a sound that compared fondly to Destroyer’s atmospheric vein of melodic rock. “Sum of Some Thing” further showcases Smalt’s gripping songwriting, this time with a mellow and contemplative aura.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of October 2022’ Spotify playlist.
