A recent single from mon cher, “all star” presents a dreamy intrigue. The project is that of Denver-based artist and producer Meghan Holton, who describes the release as “about the hopelessness of stardom.” “The original inspiration came as an antithetical response to Smash Mouth’s “All Star,”” Holton says.
“I’ll never be an all star,” the vocals open bleakly, amidst nocturnal synth envelopment and minimalist percussion. The rhythms intensify gradually as a late-night synth additions enamor, concocting a dreamy engrossment into the “outer space,” refrain.
A gentle piano joins during the ensuing verses. A shift, approaching the three-minute mark, culminates in a more impassioned vocal delivery with further dreamy textural charm. With shades of Chromatics and Lana Del Rey, “all star” is an atmospheric and melodic showing from mon cher.
