An emotive and powerfully spacious track from Helsinki-based artist GEA, “Uusikuu” is further exemplary of the stirring atmospheres and vocal work from the Finnish singer/songwriter and electronic music producer, impressing prior with the tracks “Followers” and “Snow.”
Translating to “new moon,” “Uusikuu” originated on Christmas 2020, when GEA opted to stay inside and play the synths, instead of hitting the slopes with others in the family, during a holiday in Finnish Lapland. The production process took off from there, resulting in a beautiful track that develops cohesively from vocal-fronted power into bolstering, murmuring synths and trip-hop rhythmic inspiration.
The music video, featuring a reindeer antler headpiece and work from costume designer Outi Höylä, fits the track aptly. “I thought for a moment whether this vision is completely insane. At that very moment, three deers jumped in front of me. I took it as a sign that the idea had to be implemented,” GEA says of the video’s inspiration process.
