“Devoid” is a riveting rocker from Sickpay, the project of Brooklyn-based artist Mike Birnbaum. Featuring the vocals of Jordan Welner, “Devoid” swells immediately from twangy guitar quaintness into a rousing hard-rocking fervor. Pulsing percussion leads into the vocal entry, initially adorned by more understated guitar reverberations. The vocals ascend alongside the blistering guitar burst past the 40-second mark. A reprisal of this section, approaching the two-minute turn, plays with an entrancing vigor.
