First catching our ears with melodic post-punk single “In Your Hands” last summer, Chicago-based artist Killed by The Architects impresses with their new album, Tabula Rasa. Headed by artist Jamie Berkes, the project produces a captivating rock sound throughout, at times menacing, beautiful, and addicting.
The swampy guitar tones of opener “God Complex” build into stomping percussive fervor and ominous vocals. “I am waiting for you,” the vocals warn amidst the darkening guitars and post-punk rhythmic backing. Beyond this cavernously enjoyable rocker to open the album, the release varies enjoyably in tone, evidenced nicely by “I’m in Love,” which reminds fondly of The Go-Betweens with its jangly yearning. Another highlight is “Seventeen,” which conjures a nostalgic charm in its dreamy layering and subdued power-pop hints.
