An instrumental electronic track full of color and interesting shifts, “Here and Now” shows the engaging songwriting of Jason Anthony Gomez. Pulsing piano and reflective lo-fi percussion resemble raindrops, building quaintly and breezily prior to a darker shift past the one-minute mark. The initial bouncier, effervescent qualities return shortly thereafter, then accompanied by spacey, eerie synth-laden resonance. Melodically and atmospherically, “Here and Now” makes a strong impression.
Gomez elaborates more on the track and project below:
“Here and Now was written in July 2021 and the fourth track designed for the Beauty Beyond the Divide project. The music is of competing personalities of which I could find no suitable victor. Instead I let their energies burn out to give way to a numinous postlude whose dreamy texture of stacked rhythmic and melodic patterns are inspired by MGMT’s Siberian Breaks.
The title was added after the track was completed and inspired by the novel Island by Aldous Huxley. The ethereal nature of the postlude reminded me of the sensation of presence. To be “here and now,” accepting of all the good and the bad, free from any clutter of past and future, provides us opportunity to remind ourselves what/who brings us joy and fulfillment in life.
Such opportunities for presence can be fleeting, but they can be triggered by experiences throughout our day as simple as acknowledging a beautiful flower in our yard or getting that first bite of a gooey chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven. All that said, I felt the energy found in the music and title was a perfect way to open the EP. Enjoy!”
