A new track from San Diego-based act Heather Nation, “Flower” mesmerizes with its late-night atmospherics and captivating vocal lead. “You’re a flower in the way that you never cease to amaze,” Heather Nation sings during the intriguing opening. Backing wordless soulfulness converge with scorching guitars for a fully climactic pull. Bass pulses and sporadic percussion emerges as the second minute approaches, the bass-laden entrancement amidst the vocal lead reminding fondly of Kate Bush. The opening lyrics eventually serve as a powerful refrain amidst the escalating guitars and backing vocal layering, the vocal work in the final minute being especially hypnotic. “Flower” shows masterful production and songwriting from Heather Nation.

In addition to Heather Nation on vocals, guitar, and keys, the band is comprised of drummer Fernando Gomez and bassist/multi-instrumentalist Omar Lopez. The track was recorded at NONDOH Home Studios in San Diego, arranged and co-produced by the band’s members. Heather Nation is also part of the Kate Bush cover act Baby Bushka, who sound excellent.

“Flower” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of November 2021’ Spotify playlist.
