The opening track on Metamorphosis, the debut album from Liechtenstein-based doom metal act Black Reuss, “Incomplete” epitomizes the band’s grandiose metal sound. Sludgy swells of guitar rise alongside a backing vocal choir effect, the vocals emerging just prior to the two-minute turn. The lyrics captivate with conveying of self-doubt and helplessness, complemented by a chugging guitar riff past the four-minute mark. From here, the band unleashes a frenzied metal-forward melodic vigor that drives into a satisfying finale. Fans of melodic, melancholic metal should definitely seek out Metamorphosis, a striking debut album from Black Reuss.
