A cross of crooner-friendly nostalgia and synth-pop whimsy, “Turtleneck” is a winning track from Dave Heatwave. The suavely soaring “what is this game you’re playing?” hook exudes enjoyable retro-pop allure, followed by a nostalgic doo-woppy feeling within the “always find a way,” refrain — joined thereafter by melodic, spacey synths. “Turtleneck” balances synth-pop suaveness with a heartfelt, melodic sound — as if The Housemartins embraced the synth-friendly spectrum more. “Turtleneck” has me anticipating what’s next from Dave Heatwave, for certain.
