Favours – “Memories”

//

Reflecting a consuming sound reminiscent of Prefab Sprout and wonderful sophisti-pop, “Memories” is a consuming track out today from Toronto-based duo Favours. The effort precedes their debut LP Made to Wait, out on August 7th. The sound here has me anticipating that release, for certain; it’s not often to come across a modern group with such strong sophisti-pop vibes. Such was evidenced on previously featured track “Lux Luv,” and continues further here.

I’m especially fond of the various structural twists and turns throughout the track, despite being under three minutes in duration. The first comes after the one-minute mark, following a soaring dual-vocal hook. The jangling guitar and lusher vocal presence contrasts with interesting allure against the preceding hook, though plays seamlessly with melodic infectiousness nonetheless. Synth-laden flourishes in the second half lead more haunting, nocturnal-friendly melodic twists. “Memories”

“Memories” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2020’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Dream-Pop.
