“Move Without Place” is a striking rocker from Philadelphia-based artist Air Devi. The artist, from an Indian background, grew up a fan of punk-rock; the track takes influence from this. Fast-paced percussion and hazy distorted guitars pair with melodic vocals to resemble Mitski, aesthetically, at first. Air Devi’s vocals pack a unique vocal punch at the one-minute mark and beyond, with a range-friendly quiver and Indian lyrics. The vocal effect is melodically resonant, bridging familiar indie-rock with a broader, culturally enriching context.
“This song is nod to the histories that we carry, that have shaped what we are today and how we see the world, though we may not always be aware of it,” Air Devi explains. “‘Move Without Place’ is a song about a search for freedom, truth, and belonging. It was written out of a desire to understand and connect with my roots.”
