“Ocean of Flowers” is an engrossing new track from Skygasm, the London-based husband-wife duo of Akiko Matsuda and Henry Dobson. Recorded in one take at Dobson’s Scottish countryside studio, “Ocean of Flowers” flows with beautiful textural progression. The duo write: “The song draws from our stream of consciousness and reflects a childhood nostalgia, mixed with our urban roots and the bucolic spring time surroundings of the studio.”
A percussive pit-pat immediately signals heavy guitar-based caressing, with serene vocals shortly to follow. The shoegaze-friendly nature of the production succeeds aesthetically; sweeping vocals contrast beautifully with the heavier guitar tones. Certainly, fans of shoegaze — and music in general that deftly contrasts distortion with lushness — will find this project well worth following.
