“What Could You Be Right Now?” is a newly released track from Mark Henes, the Nashville-based artist who impressed previously with “Ghost Train” and “Arm Full of Roses.” “What Could You Be Right Now?” rides on reverberating guitar twangs and a melodic vocal refrain: “What could you be right now? — home with me, home you could be happy.” Henes’ vocal lead exudes a warming, confident tone throughout, with the lyrical sentiments echoing a yearning for normalcy and embrace, a relatable sentiment in these times. Whereas “Arm Full of Roses” showed a more country-forward love song, “What Could You Be Right Now?” shows a twangier, alt-rock fixation. These prior tracks show an eclectic songwriter with accessible, melodic charm, and this particular stylistic pursuit is one that certainly succeeds.
