Zilla With Her Eyes Shut firmly caught my attention in February with the track “Whisper Whisper,” a delightfully unique pop track that reminded me both of The Knife’s electronic-minded creativity and M.I.A.’s punchy pop charm. The release made apparent that the Brighton/London-based artist was just getting started. Now, Zilla With Her Eyes Shut has released a debut full-length. The self-titled release, streaming below, affirms the artist as one with a big year ahead.
Album opener “Get Ready” establishes a consuming feeling from the get-go. Murky, atmospheric developments evolve alongside the artist’s enveloping vocal embrace, repeating “ready” with infectious allure. Aesthetically, this particular track reminds fondly of early Grimes. “Whisper Whisper,” “Get Ready,” the effective “Remember,” and the album’s other tracks comprise an album that stands among the year’s most striking releases thus far.
