Touting a riveting, darkly industrial soundscape amidst a strongly melodic push, “Waste It” is a thorough success. The track is the first single from Kai Tak, the new collaborative solo project from Los Angeles-based musician Chris King (Cold Showers). Written with collaborator Chelsey Boy, “Waste It” entrances immediately with an ominous, industrial soundscape that whirs and murmurs. Aesthetically, the track’s production lovably reminiscent of Yves Tumor. The vocals impress throughout, and especially at moments like 01:36, where an emotively gripping escalation works cohesively within the soundscape. This project sounds like if Yves Tumor and Little Dragon collaborated on something dark and beautiful. This will certainly be a project I’ll be following.
