Stan Brian – “Past in the Present”

/

“Past in the Present” is a dreamy track that recalls the ethereal new-wave of The Church and The Go-Betweens. Fellow Australian artist Stan Brian shows adeptness at crafting a consuming, nostalgic soundscape from the get-go — with trickling keys, moody guitars, and contemplative bass accompanying a forlorn vocal presence. The “need you here, need you there,” hook emphasizes a chilling string/synth, with the ensuing verse also reminiscent of The Auteurs’ overall feel. As apparent by now, “Past in the Present” reminds me fondly of several favorites in a nostalgic new-wave vein, though while also feeling unique in its own right. “Past in the Present” affirms Stan Brian as a singer/songwriter well worth following.

“Past in the Present” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of January 2020’ Spotify playlist.
