“dialogue with a new mother” is an expansive synth-pop track with ample ’80s nostalgia from .paperman, the project of Bryant Bayhan. The longing, emotive vocal presence plays with resonance amidst the clicking synths and driving percussion. The track builds with momentum; the last minute in particular features repeating vocals and swelling synth-pop assortments, reminding very much of Erasure. “This song is about a mother giving advice to her daughter who is about to have a child of her own,” the artist says. The track succeeds with a convincing aesthetic, contagious melody, and strong thematic focus.
