“Five Miles Away” is an atmospheric, post-punk track from Matsch’s forthcoming concept EP of the same name. The project comes from Italian-born artist Matt Schipsi, who crafts intimate, dark, and atmospheric music with nods to Joy Division, Depeche Mode, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. “Five Miles Away” is evidence of that convincing aesthetic. Brooding guitar tones and a steadily consuming rhythm section build a murky feel, as Schipsi’s vocals emerge with a Paul Banks-esque feel just after the 30-second mark. A percussive shift around the two-minute mark, as the vocals take a reprieve, helps guide into a climactic second half with roaring guitars and a more menacing vocal pull. “Five Miles Away” is an engaging contemporary take on dark post-punk.
