Darling Coils – “Thorns”

/

“Thorns” is an impressive track from Darling Coils, an independent artist from Passaic, New Jersey. A murky mixture of guitar twangs, electronic shifting effects, and click-clacking percussion establish the initial aesthetic, with robotic-like vocal layers peeking in. The vocals assume a clearer presence after the 40-second mark, with the guitar twangs and crisp melodic vocal assumption playing well. The track, which is about the artist’s lemon tree, rides along unassumingly, though with a hypnotic melodic allure. “Thorns” is an understated success, showcasing an artist I’m anticipating more material from.

“Thorns” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2019’ Spotify playlist.
