The Last Love are an act from Boston, whose captivating sound melds elements of funk, soul, Afro-beat, and post-punk. Known for their raw and high-energy shows, the band also impresses with their recent 7-track release Ephemera (streaming in full below). On the excellent self-titled track, a thickly reverberating bass line is the primary focus at first and remains a constant throughout, gradually accompanied by majestic strings and spirited vocals. Aesthetically, I’m reminded of Toro y Moi’s more funk-tinged material. The chorus – “This is the last time / That I’ll ever fall in love,” – is captivating, infusing the build-up of sounds throughout the verses into a cohesively engaging result. Ephemera is a quality release that shows why this Boston act is attracting ample attention.
