Hailing from Stockholm, indie-pop act Virgins at Heart have been playing together since the early 2000s, though just recently have started to record “in a more serious fashion” with the release of their debut album 2 2 Tango in 2016. The group recorded in some of Stockholm’s notable studios ((Atlantis studio, Riksmixningsverket, Cosmos mastering) for their second album Safety Lagoon, though most of the production still took place in band member Johan’s basement. Certainly, there’s a polish and shine to the group’s pop songwriting and production, while still retaining a creative sense of bedroom/basement-pop, which lends an endearing quality.
We’re happy to premiere three of the band’s tracks from Safety Lagoon: the shimmering and woodwind-accompanied “Blue Sunshine,” the tropical and hooky “The Only Way,” and effervescent key-laden popper “Summer Cat Winter Dog.” All three do well in showcasing the band’s hook-filled pop songwriting and soaring production, sharing a fondness for hooks while showing tonal differences. They’re the type of efforts that start quaintly enough, though develop with a shimmering hook-minded charm and entice replays in the process. Stream Safety Lagoon in full on Spotify here.
