The dreamy and hypnotic “Always” is the latest from Oracle Sisters, a project led by painter Lewis Lazar and mathematician Christopher Willatt. They have been creating music together since they were childhood friends in Brussels, Belgium. After their own separate musical endeavors, in New York for Lazar and Edinburgh for Willatt, the duo reunited in Paris in 2017 — naming their project Oracle Sisters. Julia Johansen joined the project shortly thereafter.
“Always” was recorded live in “an old hidden recording studio next to Canal St Martin, Paris.” Its video was captured across Finland in a 1962 Ford Anglia and a seaplane, with the film chronicling the band on a fake tour (inspired by filmmakers Aki Kaurismaki and Wes Anderson). Twangy guitar jangles and lushly melodic vocals lead the way — reminding of Mac DeMarco in its engaging aesthetic, while the quivering vocal bits recall Grizzly Bear.
