Divine Sweater – “2×2”

/

Whereas some bands struggle for a confident sound with their debut release, “2×2” presents the opposite scenario. The debut single from Boston-based act Divine Sweater, “2×2” is an exuberantly catchy and addictive effort that succeeds immensely. A galloping bass line and sonorous brass arise during the first 30 seconds, the spirited vocals emerging shortly thereafter. There’s a suave, western-y feel to the accompanying guitars. The track’s chorus is outstanding — “All I wanna do is ride alone along the California seacoast with you,” over prancing keys and melodic brass. It sounds like something The New Pornographers would churn out during their heyday. “2×2” is a fantastic track, and even more impressive that this is a debut.

Per the band: “The song is driven by a melodic bass line and energetic trumpet, and also features a modulation at the end. Lyrically, the song follows a couple in true love in a post-apocalyptic future in which every other human has been wiped out by a global flood.”

“2×2” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of November 2018’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Indie Rock.
