Punku’s “On the Beach” begins with a wave of melodic distortion, touting a lush gauziness over heartfelt vocals. The South American born artist aims for – and achieves – a sound that is “all at once chaotic, passionate, and drenched in sun kissed harmonies.” This track in particular finishes with a serene outro inspired by chillwave, resulting in an effort that shows the artist’s simultaneous grasp on psych-rock, alternative, and electronic-minded forays. There’s also a sort of David Byrne-like nonchalance in the vocal tone that plays well within the approach. In all, “On the Beach” is a nice showing from Punku.
