Moon Panda is a new project based in Brighton, comprising Californian songwriter Maddy Myers, Danish guitarist Gustav Moltke, Bristol-based synth player George Godwin, and London-based percussionist Alfie Webber. They cite Portishead, Beirut, Men I Trust, Beach House, and Angel Olsen as key influences. Such is evident on captivating debut single “Rabbit”, released on June 29th via My Little Empire. “Rabbit is about unhealthy love.” Myers explains. “It’s someone so infatuated with their partner that they can’t end their tragic, dependent relationship. I wanted ‘Rabbit’ to feel quite hypnotic and have some edge. Like a predator lurking around.”
Myers was also inspired by “a character formed in Heiko Julien’s collection of wit-filled 21st century love poems I’m Ready To Die A Violent Death.” Musically, the track projects a versatile vocal lead that alternates between lush retrospection and perky bursts of infectiousness. Combining with a hypnotic soundscape that meshes tranquil guitars with spacey electronics, the vocal presence plays very well. “Rabbit” is easily capable of transporting listeners to more tranquil realms.
“Rabbit” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2018’ Spotify playlist.
