Mad Mask – “Taffy”

/

A captivating track off Mad Mask’s forthcoming Alter Ego Mixtape, releasing in May, “Taffy” is an impressive showing that builds from straightforward bounciness to commendable synth-led atmospheric expansion. Prominent stabs of synths arrive just prior to the one-minute mark, with a bit of a brass-like elegance adding to the fold shortly thereafter. From here, the playful synths stab become a frequent component, combining with sly vocals that maintain a pop-friendly demeanor with a bit of conscious hip-hop thrown in for good measure. Hints of brass at the two-minute mark, and at the track’s conclusion, add nicely to the tonal variation and add some depth to this engaging release.

“I chose the name “Mad Mask” because after growing up in the church I felt like I had these masks that I would wear for people, like these censored versions of myself with fabricated emotional capacities,” he explains. “I decided to leave and make an honest record and say what I want to say.”
