“Try To Be Someone” is a melodically engaging journey of self-discovery from DONCAT, off his forthcoming album Preservation of the Spirit, out 4/27. The project of Duncan Nielsen, DONCAT reminds of The War on Drug’s warm rock-laden nostalgia, with comforting melodies and chugging intensity accompanying lyrics with an Americana tilt. The vocal lingering and bass line also tout a bit of a Neil Young feel; the entire section from the two-minute point to the three-minute mark is excellent in resembling a cross between Young and War on Drugs. ”‘Try To Be Someone’ tells the story of a young hopeful headed to Los Angeles in search of fame, but more so reinvention,” Nielsen told NYLON. Recalling some familiar sounds while bringing forth a sound that’s entirely his own in the end, the San Francisco-based singer-songwriter really impresses here
