“Free” is one of the singles off Denver-based Joe Murray’s debut album I Am, releasing on November 3rd. The track showcases a very promising songwriter with an enjoyable aesthetic. The primary melody rides on TOPS-like guitar-based minimalism and sporadic bursts of synth, not too far from Mac DeMarco’s synth-touched tracks like “On the Level” in style and tone. Murray’s vocal alternation, with various pitches and enthusiasm, plays well in describing lyrics about love and freedom. The vocal/guitar/synth interplay works well on all fronts, helping make the forthcoming I Am an album I’m anticipating, for sure.
