Camp Candle caught my attention last year with the stunning track “Surface“, whose sample-forward, vintage orchestral allure with hip-hop rhythmic sophistication reminded of Avalanches. New track “Before the Night” is equally engrossing, though certainly darker, less sample-heavy, and more in the synth-pop vein — very similar to Little Dragon in terms of arsenal, and fondly so. A slight melodic transition around 01:30 signals the track’s second half, culminating past the two-minute mark as an extra guitar reverberation and percussive effects complement the initial hook. It’s a consuming, atmospheric journey throughout that continues to show Camp Candle as an immensely talented project.
