Taipei is an alternative/indie-pop project of Finnish artist Henrik Sundström, who strives to create music dripping with warm nostalgia and and melancholy. Mission accomplished on striking new single “Flashback Man”, where the occasional flourish of vintage chiptune-like synths coincide with a lushly driven bass line and effervescent key twinkles for a nice beginning, leading cohesively into the spacious “he’s holding onto your memory” hook. The contrast between a rhythmically active verse and sparser chorus works well, with the second go-around adding some percussion expansion to the hook to maintain general interest. It’s a strong showing of vibe-heavy songwriting and production from Taipei, whose recent eponymous album can be streamed in full here.
